Please do read the follow up penpricks did on the hoax it carried out. on www.penpricks.blogspot.com. It is a really sad comment on Indian journalism today.
I too was taken in by this! I was the newsreader for the 8:15 am bulletin on the day the story appeared. As part of the bulletin, the newreader has to prepare a 2 minute capsule of some main stories appearing across several newspapers, rounded off by a couple of "human interest" stories...and I chose this for the latter category. How embarrasing! Having got that off my chest, I do wonder what mechanism "responsible" publications follow to check the veracity of stories they carry.
A journalist and committed liberal, who hates straitjackets of any kind and detests labels even more.

It's really disappointing incident. Media should have a self-regulating mechanism so such unauthentic news can be avoided.
